Who wouldn’t want to have the power of the gods? I know I do. But is being a god really that great? In the immortals we were introduced to a side of the gods living style that tells us that their lifestyle is not that high and mighty.
The Immortals is about a young peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) who is trained by an old Wiseman to become a great warrior. As little did Theseus know the Wiseman was none other than the God of gods, Zeus (Luke Evans). Zeus was training Theseus to have him willingly take the leadership role during the future battle against King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). King Hyperion has slowly built up hatred towards the gods for not helping his dying wife and kids when they needed them. This eventually leads him to seek the lovely oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto) who supposedly knows the location of the magical Epirus Bow that has the ability to kill the gods. King Hyperion, through bloodshed and murder of innocent people and destruction of villages and temples, desperately seeks the bow to unleash the Titans portrayed by midget Frost Giants from Thor.
Theseus, however, doesn’t really want to fight for his fellow Hellenics. But when King Hyperion kills his mother, Theseus seeks only one thing: revenge. With the aid of Phaedra and his comrade Stavros (Stephen Dorff), Theseus heads on an adventure to prepare and fight the ruthless king.
Even though Theseus was trained by Zeus, abiding by the law of gods, no gods may interfere with human affairs – no matter how they feel watching mortals kill each other or how close King Hyperion gets to unleashing the Titans. But few do interfere and one god gets killed by Zeus for violating the law.
The story overall is mostly made up. A lot of what they introduced in the movie is not from Greek mythology, rather from the mind of the writer and director. The Titans are a race of powerful deities who ruled during the legendary Golden Age but were eventually overthrown by younger gods known as the Olympians. Titans were tall and strong and backed down from no challenge. However, in this movie, they were portrayed as small and weak what seemed to me as a group of midget Frost Giants from Thor.
Amongst the first generation of the 12 Titans in Greek Mythology was Hyperion. Hyperion was the lord of light and the Titan of the East. Furthermore he was also seen as the “God of Watchfulness and Wisdom” who later became the physical incarnation of the Sun. In this movie he is instead portrayed as an evil king willing to kill innocent people for the sake of revenge and power. This completely destroys the legend of a great Titan. In all honestly, I do not understand where and how they went about their research. Most of the facts in this movie were incorrect and worst of all the writer and director ruined most of the legend that creative minds such as Homer has come up with.
Getting to the review of what was presented, the movie was filled with action. The action is what made me choose to ignore the fake information present in the movie and focus on the story they wanted to present. The actors/actresses selected to play the role of the characters in the movie was great. Cavill did an amazing job of portraying the young Theseus and even presented some butt-kicking action. Pinto did a wonderful job of playing the role of the oracle even though I think she still needs to work her expression. As usual Rourke is an amazing actor easily played his role to perfection as the ‘slobby’ and murderous King Hyperion.
If you’re thinking of watching a gladiator type movie like the 300, you might enjoy this. It is filled with action, a good story line (even though it’s mostly made up), and good character portrayal. The movie also does rip of few cinematic features stolen from the 300 such as ripped men in tiny shorts, slow motion fight scenes with blood and guts spewing out and a sex scene involving the two main characters.
Speaking of the sex scene, I know quite a bit of you guys (even girls) are reading this to find out about the rumors of Frida Pinto getting naked for the sex scene. If you’re ready here it is: someone does get naked and shows off her butt and one of her breast; but it’s not Ms. Pinto. For the movie they used a body double for that scene as Pinto refused to expose her body. For the ladies, the body shown in the same scene of this movie does belong to Cavill. So enjoy.
